WILLIAM R. MEREDEW - INTERVIEW 08-03-13
Our man on the ground Harry Hurlock managed to catch up with enigmatic artist William R. Meredew after the opening night of his new group show, Sodastream. We managed to get a few minutes of his time in a disabled toilet in the Royal Albert.
H: What are your initial thoughts?
W: Fantastic.
H: About art? What do you think about art?
W: I mean, it’s magnificent.
H: It is magnificent isn’t it.
W: Yeah.
H: So give me three words? You’ve given me magnificent, i need two more.
W: The thing is, it’s so different, it expands. I mean, right now, i’d say that the current art climate is, i’d say ‘fun and playful’. See it’s hard to sum it all up. You’re making me sum up art?
H: I am. Well, i’m trying to. Obviously you don’t have to but.
W: I think it changes.
H: Yeah it does.
W: I mean obviously art can completely change the world. Everywhere. I mean, i think if we didn’t have art, if the world didn’t have art it would be a much worse place.
H: It would.
W: I mean, imagine, ok, we’ve seen the Congo. We’ve seen things like… i don’t know, we’ve seen documentaries about the Congo and Africa and stuff. It’s bad. I’m not going to beat around the bush. It’s bad. Imagine it without art. Imagine the Congo without, say, Picasso. Imagine if the Congo couldn’t see Picasso. Imagine where they’d be then. Imagine General Butt Naked, we’ve seen the documentary about him, imagine if he hadn’t seen, you know, a Matisse, or a Van Gogh. Imagine then. Imagine then.
H: The mind does boggle, doesn’t it.
W: It would have been way worse, we know that much.
H: Ok, so can you give me a final thought for the end of the interview?
I’d probably say that art is the most poignant thing in the world. Without art, where would the world be?
